You’ve graduated from a top law school, you’ve participated in the right summer associate program and the best summer internships, and, now have a job at a premier law firm. You used to be excited about working in one of the top attorney jobs in the country. But, now, when you finally get to work, you find it incredibly unfulfilling. The hours are long, the work is stressful and you find that you are spending more and more time doing the something you do not love. You aren’t enjoying work at a law firm, but you know you have a passion for law. Or maybe you are a seasoned lawyer looking for a change of pace but aren’t ready for retirement yet.  You don’t want to have to start over completely. So what now? Well, the next option could be to become a legal recruiter.

Who Uses Legal Recruiters?

Top law firms and corporations use legal recruiters to attract, vet and experienced lawyers. Many law firms and corporations use legal recruiters to help with their lawyer search process. There are a lot of things to take into consideration when thinking about becoming a legal recruiter.  The first question you need to ask yourself is, do you even want to become a legal recruiter? If you had a legal recruiter help you find your current job, think about what he or she did. It might be a good idea to even call them and inquire more about their career. It’s good to do any research you can before making this decision.  Ask about what the job entails, how they got to where they are today, and the positives and negatives about the job. Many of our legal recruiters and search consultants did a lot of this research before choosing to start their careers. It’s important to get all the information possible so you can make the correct decision for you. Once you’ve done the research, you need to weigh the options.

A Legal Recruiter Is Independent

One of the positives about legal recruiting is that you get to be in control of your own destiny.  As an associate, when you’re working at a law firm as a lawyer everything you work on is determined by another person, from what cases you get to when you get to leave at the end of the day. The workload you receive is completely dependent on what the partners are bringing to the table. Along with that, billing rates are incredibly high, especially at a premier firm, making it harder to get clients, and harder to advance at the firm. When you become a legal recruiter, you choose what you do. You get to be in charge of your life. If you are motivated enough, you can climb the ladder fairly easily. Being a legal recruiter requires a hunger for advancement. You don’t have to worry about depending on someone else to provide advancement for you.

A Legal Recruiter Controls His or Her Career Course

Another positive about becoming a legal recruiter is job security. When working at a top firm, the only real way you can be secure at your job is if you bring in a lot of clients, and as previously pointed out, that can be very hard to do, even if you’re a premier lawyer. As a recruiter, you can work in the economy and a bad economy. Different types of legal thrive in different types of economies, but no matter what, everyone needs a legal recruiter to find those lawyers.

A Legal Recruiter Is Resilient

You have to make sure that you are able to take rejection. Rejection is a huge part of recruiting. Recruiters deal with rejection all the time. The best legal recruiters can handle rejection with no problem. They get rejected from firms and candidates all the time. If you’re good at handling rejection, then recruiting will probably be a good fit.

A Legal Recruiter Enjoys Research and Writing

Writing and research are also huge parts of recruiting. If you enjoy the research side of law, then this might be a great fit. As a recruiter, you will be writing to law firms, attorneys. As well as writing guides and articles, like this one. You also have to research for your candidates.
